High Point-Thomasville used a two-run home run from UNCW's Kip Brandenburg to force extra innings agains the Asheboro Copperheads Monday night at Finch Field before losing 14-7 in 10 innings.
Brandenburg's seventh big fly of the summer, which leads the HiToms, scored Mississippi State's Luke Hancock and tied the game at 6 with one out in the bottom of the 9th. Asheboro then cranked out eight runs on eight hits in the top of the 10th to blow the game open and secure the victory.
With the loss, HPT dropped two games back of the division-leading Gastonia Grizzlies in the CPL West with five games remaining in the season. Gastonia extended its division lead tonight with a 6-3 home victory against the Macon Bacon.
Asheboro tallied two runs in the top of the 1st to take an early lead against HPT, but the HiToms struck back with runs in the 2nd and 3rd to tie the game. Catawba's Bryce Butler reached on an error in the 2nd to score Middle Tennessee State's Josh Baker, while North Carolina's Angel Zarate scored from third base in the 3rd inning on a throwing error by Asheboro catcher Joey Raffaele.
The Copperheads opened up a 4-2 lead with a home run by Josh Hood in the top of the 5th inning, but the HiToms answered to tie it back up in the bottom half on an two-run single by Brandenburg to score Zarate and Dallas Baptist's Blayne Jones.
Asheboro continued the seesaw battle with two more runs in the 7th before Brandenburg equalized in the bottom of the 9th with his two-run blast to straightaway center field.
The Copperheads delivered the decisive blow in extra innings, however, pounding out hit after hit to pull away to a 14-7 victory.
