HPT fell behind early on Thursday night in Gastonia, and weren't able to recover as they fell to the Grizzlies at Sims Legion Park by a 14-4 margin.
While the HiToms allowed the first ten runs of the game, they managed to make things interesting in the middle frames. After Kip Brandenburg (UNC Wilmington) hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and Cam Mills (Catawba) singled home Luke Spiva (Winston-Salem State), the Toms loaded the bases in the fifth.
Trailing 10-3, Josh Baker (Middle Tennessee State) was able to drive in a run, but slick fielding by Gastonia enabled the Grizzlies to get the first two outs of the inning, and prevent further damage from there. Gastonia tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.
The HiToms will be back at Finch Field on Friday when they host the Forest City Owls in a crucial CPL West Dvision matchup, with all four teams still tied in the second half standings. Don't forget to stop by for Farm to Field Night at the park, with fresh produce from local vendors being sold on the concourse. First pitch is just after 7:00 p.m.
