HiToms drop close one at Fayetteville

Kip Brandenburg (UNC Wilmington) launched a two-run home run over the left field wall, but the SwampDogs rallied for a 3-2 win at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville on Wednesday night.

The SwampDogs got the scoring started in the fourth inning with an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead.

Brandenburg's homer in the fifth gave a 2-1 lead back to the visiting HiToms, but another RBI single in the bottom of the inning tied the game at two. Fayetteville would get the eventual game-winning home run on a solo shot off the bat of CPL All-Star Alex Kachler.

Luke Hancock (Mississippi State) had a multi-hit game for HPT, while Drew Smith (Northeast CC), Danny Lynch (Southern Miss) and JP McGuire (Gardner-Webb) all recorded hits for the Toms.

The two sides will reconvene and play the back half of a home-and-home tomorrow at Finch Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and postgame fireworks will be part of the July 4 festivities at the park.

Tickets to Thursday's game against the SwampDogs will also be good for the HiToms home game on Saturday, July 6 against the Forest City Owls.
