HiToms rally falls short to Asheboro in 9-8 loss

HPT outscored the Asheboro Copperheads by an 8-2 margin over the last five innings of the game, but just fell short on Monday night in a tight 9-8 game.

Asheboro would get on the board first with a pair of three run home runs. Jacob Whitley (Charlotte) notched the first HiToms run of the game with an RBI single to score Kip Brandenburg (UNC Wilmington).

Blayne Jones (Dallas Baptist) got the Toms back in the game with a grand slam in the sixth inning to draw within two. HPT made it a one-run game as Angel Zarate (North Carolina) blasted a two-run homer of his own to make it an 8-7 game.

After Asheboro hit a solo homer in the eighth, Jones came through once again with an RBI single to score Danny Lynch (Southern Miss). With runners on first and second and HPT trailing by one, the Copperheads were able to retire the side and end the game.

The HiToms will have Tuesday off before traveling to the Swamp to take on Fayetteville Wednesday.

Don't miss the 4th of July at Finch Field this coming Thursday as first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. with postgame fireworks on display shortly after the conclusion of the game.
