HPT had a late lead on Sunday afternoon against Martinsville, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs rallied in extra innings to a 14-9 win.
Martinsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead off a pair of RBI singles, but the HiToms would cut into the deficit with a solo home run by Angel Zarate (North Carolina) and bases-loaded walk by Kip Brandenburg (UNC Wilmington). The Mustangs would take a 5-2 lead into the fourth inning but a Zarate RBI single and Nick Ray (SE Louisiana) three-run home run would give HPT a 6-5 lead into the seventh.
After Martinsville would tie the game on a solo home run, it was Danny Lynch (Southern Miss) who gave HPT a 9-6 lead with a towering three-run homer of his own. But the Mustangs would strike for three runs to tie the game, and five to take the lead as they rolled past the Toms in the tenth.
The HiToms will head to Asheboro on Monday to take on the Copperheads before an off day Tuesday. Their next home game is this Thursday, July 4 as HPT hosts the Fayetteville SwampDogs, with the annual fireworks display happening after the game's conclusion.
