The first walk-off win of the 2019 season at Finch Field couldn't have come at a better time.
Southeastern Louisiana's Nick Ray laced a double to the centerfield wall to score UNCW's Kip Brandenburg from first base in the bottom of the 7th of game two to give the HiToms their second 1-0 win of the day against the Asheboro Copperheads.
High Point-Thomasville bookended both games of the doubleheader with runs - HPT scored in the bottom of the 1st in game one on an RBI single by Grand Canyon's Drew Smith that scored North Carolina's Angel Zarate.
Ray's double ended the night with a second victory, as HiToms pitching shut out Asheboro's offense through 14 innings of baseball.
UNCW's Rian Haire started and got the win in game one, throwing four shutout innings and striking out three batters. Winston-Salem State's Eli Boles followed with an inning of shutout ball before Dallas Baptist's Luke Trahan closed the door over the final two frames.
In game two, HPT got another good start from Louisburg's Luke Davis, who threw 4 and 1/3 innings, allowed five hits and struck out four. Lee's Logan Workman, one of the HiToms' three CPL All-Stars, took over for Davis and immediately struck out two Asheboro batters with two runners in scoring position to keep the Copperheads off the scoreboad. Workman retired eight of the nine hitters he faced, earning the win while striking out three.
