HiToms fall to Gastonia 6-3 on the road, face Asheboro tomorrow in home doubleheader

The HiToms struck for two runs in the first inning against the West-division-leading Gastonia Grizzlies at Sims Legion Park Wednesday afternoon, but couldn't hold the lead, dropping the game 6-3.

Grand Canyon's Drew Smith and Middle Tennessee's Josh Baker each drove home runs in the top of the 1st to give the HiToms the early advantage.

But Gastonia held the HiTom bats quiet through the middle innings and chipped away at HPT starting pitcher Riley Isenhour (Wingate), who managed to keep one of the best offenses in the league at bay for much of the game.

The Grizzlies struck late though, scoring two runs in the 7th inning in Isenhour's final frame to take a 4-2 lead. UNCW's Kip Brandenburg doubled home Baker in the top of the 8th to cut the deficit to one, but Gastonia added two more runs in the 8th to secure a 6-3 victory.
