Despite a fast start, the High Point-Thomasville HiToms fell to the Asheboro Copperheads 9-6 at McCrary Park Thursday night to drop to 0-5 in Coastal Plain League play.
HPT jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the 1st and two more in the top of the 3rd. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Winston-Salem State's Luke Spiva and Northeast CC's Drew Smith put the HiToms on the board in the opening stanza, while Southeastern Louisiana's Nick Ray drove home Smith with a sacrifice fly. Smith, Ray, and Northeast CC's Christian Dumont all made their HiToms debuts last night.
Bloomsburg's Ben Newbert pushed the lead to five with a two-run homer in the third, marking his first home run of the CPL season.
Asheboro responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the HiTom lead to 5-3, before the Copperheads tallied five runs in the following inning courtesy of three fielding errors. Four of the five runs were counted as unearned and gave the homestanding Asheboro squad an 8-5 advantage.
High Point-Thomasville drew one run back in the top of the 7th after Smith drove home his collegiate teammate Dumont with an RBI single to centerfield. Asheboro returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-6.
